Understanding discount fields

Name - This is not visible to customers. It helps you to organize your discount sets, so you can name the set whatever you like. 

If the discount requires a minimum purchase, check the corresponding box and enter an amount.

Discount Prefix - This is auto-generated but you can change it to whatever you'd like. It will show up before the rest of the auto-generated discount code. (ie. discountprefix-564234728)

Discount Type - Fixed amount equals a dollar amount; Percentage amount equals a percentage of the price; Free shipping will negate shipping costs at checkout. Make sure you enter the value in the field on the right.

Applies to - Select whether the code will apply to the entire order, a product, or a collection. Check the box below if you only want the code to apply once per order. 

Customers - "Everyone" will allow the code to be used by anyone. Selecting a certain group of customers limits its use. You can access Customer Groups in Shopify's Admin under Customers.

Date - Ensure you pick a start date and time equal to or greater than the time of creation. Leave the End field blank if you don't want the codes to expire. 

Limits - "Limit number of times this discount can be used in total" will limit each discount code in the set. It does not make the rest invalid. "Limit to one use per customer" ensures that a customer only uses the discount code once.
